History of the bank

In 1922 Savings Bank was established in Minsk, Belarus.

In 1994 the Bank joined SWIFT.

In 1995 Joint-Stock Savings Bank Belarusbank was established following a merger between Savings Bank of the Republic of Belarus and Commercial Bank Belarusbank. International auditors start auditing Belarusbank's financial statements according to international standards.

In 1996 the Bank becomes a principal member of Europay International (presently MasterCard International).

In 1996 Belarusbank acquired Belsviazbank and Belzheldorbank.

In 1997 the Bank established representative offices in Warsaw, Poland and Moscow, Russia.

In 1999 the first international ratings were assigned by Thomson Financial Bankwatch.

In 2000 the Bank became a principal member of VISA International.

Since 2001 international ratings have been assigned by Fitch Ratings. Foreign banks grant Belarusbank ECA-covered loans without Governmental guarantees.

In 2003 the Bank established a representative office in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

On July 14, 2005 MinskComplexBank merged into Belarusbank.

In 2006 Belarusbank attracted on the international market its debut syndicated loan.

In 2007 the Bank made the next step on the international debt capital market by placing CLNs among foreign investors.

In June 2007 Belarusbank opened its fourth representative office in Beijing, China.

In August 2007 Belarusbank provided its first export finance loan.

In 2007 also the first issue of mortgage bonds on the local market and the first issue of loan participation notes were held.

In March 2008 Belarusbank introduced foreign exchange transactions in the currency of the People's Bank of China.

In September 2008 the Bank was entitled to conduct transactions of purchase and sale on precious stones.

In October 2008 Memorandum of understanding between Belarusbank and Deutsche Boerse AG was signed.

In March 2009 Belarusbank and the Warsaw Stock Exchange signed an Agreement on the Cooperation in Warsaw, providing Belarusian companies with an access to the international capital market.

In June 2009 the Bank started to provide export loans to non-residents of the Republic of Belarus.

In August 2010 Belarusbank acted as lead arranger of the debut issue of sovereign Eurobonds of the Republic of Belarus.

In December 2010 Belarusbank attracted the largest syndicated loan in the history of the Belarusian banking system for USD 145 million.

In 2010 also correspondent account RMB was opened with Agricultural Bank of China (Shanghai branch), which made it possible to effect the first FX transaction of buying RMB for USD.

In 2011 Belarusbank became associate member of ROTOBO.

Belarusbank is the first bank in Belarus which entered debt capital market in 2012.

In May 2012 Belarusbank became a member of WSBI.

In 2012 Belarusbank becomes bank-partner of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Interbank Consortium.

In 2014 The Banker rated Belarusbank as 480th on the Top 500 Banking Brands list with the estimated value of 159 million U.S. dollars.

Belarusbank attracted a $15 mln loan from Russia’s Joint Stock Commercial Bank RosEvroBank.

Belarusbank received the STP Excellence Award Deutsche Bank Trust Company Americas, New York for the high quality of formatting USD payments.

Belarusbank attracted resources from a consortium of Swiss banks consisting of UBS AG, Credit Suisse AG and Zürcher Kantonalbank to finance the purchase of two electric trains manufactured by Stadler Bussnang AG for Belarusian railways.

Commerzbank AG presented an award to Belarusbank for cooperation with foreign financial institutions in the sphere of foreign trade finance.

Raiffeisen Bank International AG (Austria) presented the Straight Through Processing (STP) Quality Award to Belarusbank for the high quality of EUR remittances.

Belarusbank and China Eximbank signed a loan agreement within the framework of an investment project stipulating the construction of a bleached sulfate pulp and rayon pulp plant.

Belarusbank signed a cooperation agreement with the Export-Import Bank of the Slovak Republic (Eximbanka SR).

Belarusbank received the STP Award 2013 from Commerzbank AG for the exceptional quality of the procession of payments through nostro accounts with the German bank.

2021

By the end of 2020, Belarusbank increased its share in the real estate lending market to 66%. More than 15 thousand contracts were concluded for a total amount of over BYN 900 million within the framework of Decree No. 240

Belarusbank was the first in the country to be accredited to operate as a specialized depository of investment funds. As part of an integrated approach to servicing mutual investment funds, the bank's depository developed a new service - maintaining registers of owners of investment units.

Belarusbank won the People's Brand Award in three categories: "Bank and its Banking Product", "Remote Banking Service" and "Installment Card".

Belarusbank won in the category of "Remote banking services" in the Consumer nomination at the competition "Brand of the Year 2020".

Belarusbank provided support to Belkommunmash in the supply of Belarusian trolleybuses to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The cost of the contract was more than EUR 14 million.

Belarusbank became a partner of the new BYNEX crypto exchange, which allows you to work with Bitcoin and Ethereum. Thanks to the cooperation of the bank and the ERPBEL company, which developed a platform for the exchange, players can enter and withdraw fiat currency (Belarusian rubles and US dollars) with the lowest commission using a Visa payment card.

Belarusbank implemented the possibility for clients to book a meeting with a bank employee in more than 480 outlets of the bank through Belarusbank’s website.

Belarusbank presented a new card product: club "Svoi" - for legal entities. The club card can perform not only payment functions, but also be used as a pass to an organization or enterprise.

STP Quality Award 2020 was given to Belarusbank by one of the largest European financial institutions Raiffeisen Bank International AG (Austria) for the high quality of registration and compliance with the requirements for formatting international payments by the bank in 2020.

Bank of the Year 2020 awards was won by Belarusbank in the "Deal of the Year" nomination and in the prize-winner categories "Investment Bank", "Best Bank among Large Banks", "Bank with National Capital", "Lending Leader". In addition, Belarusbank became second by the results of the Internet voting. Also, one of the partners of the award – Kaspersky Lab - recognized the bank among the laureates of the Information Security nomination.

For trade and service organizations, Belarusbank implemented the possibility of connecting a software cash register to the bank's acquiring network – an innovative device that combines the functionality of a POS terminal, a cash register and means of control of tax authorities or means of control of the operator.

Thanks to the opening by Belarusbank of multi-currency accounts in an Interstate Bank (Moscow, Russia), Belarusians living in the EAEU countries and Moldova can receive pensions in the currency of their country of residence.

Global Finance magazine announced the winners of the 9th annual award "Innovators 2021": Belarusbank became the innovator of 2021 in the field of payments by implementing the "See and Pass" service.

The international rating agency Fitch Ratings confirmed Belarusbank's ratings: long-term issuer default rating in foreign currency at level B, the outlook is negative; short-term issuer default rating in foreign currency at level B; stability rating at level b-; support rating at level 4; long-term rating support level at level B.

Belarusbank developed a new service for online registration of a guarantee for obtaining a consumer loan.

Belarusbank launched a new unique product - a program of voluntary insurance against accidents and diseases for the whole family without specifying the insured persons in the contract "With care for loved ones".

Belarusbank and Credit Bank of Moscow signed a cooperation agreement.

Belarusbank, Mastercard and Assist were the first in the country to implement a new service for payment security – the MDES for Merchants (M4M) tokenization technology became available to users.

The international magazine World Finance summed up the results of its annual Banking Awards 2021: Belarusbank won in the nomination "Best Retail Bank".

Belarusbank, together with the electronic payment provider Assist, introduced the Visa Token Service (VTS) technology of the global payment technology company Visa.

The international rating agency S&P Global Ratings confirmed the long-term and short-term credit ratings of Belarusbank at the B/C level. The forecast of rating changes to negative.

Belarusbank launched the delivery of payment cards by mail. The new service is available to customers who issue a card at the bank's branches, provided that they receive a PIN code independently in a self-service terminal (infokiosk), through Internet banking or M-banking.

2020

By 2020, Belarusbank financed more than 6.5 thousand projects as part of the implementation of the Program to Support Small and Medium-sized Businesses. The amount of credit support in 5 years amounted to about BYN 4.5 billion.

The Bank started issuing BELCARD cards with an EMV microprocessor.

Belarusbank and fintech startup Cashew launched an innovative payment method using a QR code.

Belarusbank and the Administration of the Chinese-Belarusian Industrial Park and the Company for the Development of the Industrial Park signed a General Agreement on cooperation.

Belarusbank together with Belgosstrakh introduced a new service for voluntary insurance of drivers and passengers against accidents.

Belarusbank and Bank Pekao (Poland) signed a framework agreement on cooperation.

Garmin Pay payment service became available for holders of Belarusbank Visa cards.

Belarusbank won the Brand of the Year 2019 contest.

The international edition of The Banker recognized Belarusbank as the Bank of the Year 2020 in Belarus.

Belarusbank launched a comprehensive "Children's" product, which includes a deposit, a payment card and insurance.

Belarusbank became the winner of the international festival-competition "Choice of the Year 2020" in the nomination "Bank". This is the 13th medal of the bank in this competition.

2019

According to the results of work for 2018, Belarusbank received a profit of almost BYN 342 million with a plan of BYN 292 million. The bank's share in the market for attracting funds from legal entities was 42.1%, individuals - 45%, and in the corporate sector lending market – 43.3%, in consumer lending - 18.7%.

Belarusbank allocated more than BYN 1.3 billion to support small and medium-sized businesses in 2018. Within the framework of the current Program of support for small and medium-sized businesses, about 5 thousand projects of various fields of activity were financed.

Belarusbank was awarded two awards at the "Brand of the Year 2018" contest: it was recognized as the winner of the "Consumer Nomination" in the "Banks" category, and received a silver medal in the "Installment Card" category.

Belarusbank and the Austrian Control Bank (OeKB) signed an agreement on the extension of the existing loan in the amount of EUR 30 million.

Belarusbank and Ak Bars Bank identified ways to expand bilateral cooperation.

The first VIP office of Belarusbank was launched in the Head Office building on Dzerzhinsky Avenue, 18.

A loan agreement on the provision of financial resources to Belarusbank in the amount of EUR 100 million for the development of the national economy was signed with the China Development Bank.

Belarusbank for the first time acted as the leading organizer of a dual-currency syndicated loan for Agrobank JSCB (Uzbekistan). The amount of syndicated loan exceeded EUR 70 million in equivalent.

The Apple Pay service became available to the holders of Belarusbank cards.

Belarusbank and DZ Bank AG (Germany) signed a Framework Agreement on strategic cooperation.

Belarusbank became the winner of the People's Mark award in the nomination "Bank and its banking product" and the winner in the nomination "Installment Card" with the product "Magnit".

Charity project "Belarusbank. Parental Home" became one of the winners of the competition of social projects "Partnership for Sustainable Development 2019", organized by the local network of the UN Global Compact in Ukraine.

2018

On February 1, 2018 Fitch Ratings upgraded the Long-Term Foreign Currency Issuer Default Rating (IDR) of Belarusbank to ‘B’ from ‘B-’ with a Stable Outlook. The Short-Term IDR was affirmed at ‘B’, the Support Rating was upgraded to ‘4’ from ‘5’, the Support Rating Floor was upgraded to 'B' from 'B-'.

On March 19, 2018 Global Finance named Belarusbank “The Best Bank in Belarus in 2018”.

In March 2018 Belarusbank acted as a general sponsor of the international conference “Belarus: Trade Finance 2018” held in Minsk.

On March 21, 2018 Belarusbank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) signed the Confirming Bank Agreement under Trade Facilitation Programme.

On May 24, 2018 Belarusbank and Russia’s Rosselkhozbank signed a Cooperation Agreement.

On May 29, 2018 Belarusbank organized a Financial Institutions Day in Mir Castle.

In June 2018 representatives of Belarusbank visited the Swiss Confederation. The delegation took part in the 10th session of Belarus-Switzerland joint committee on trade and economic cooperation in Bern and in the round table discussion “Belarus-Switzerland: new opportunities for business” in Turgi.

In June 2018 Belarusbank and China EximBank expanded cooperation by establishing a $300 million limit.

On June 15, 2018 Fitch Ratings has affirmed the ratings of Belarusbank. The Long-Term Foreign Currency Issuer Default Rating (IDR) of Belarusbank was affirmed at ‘B’ level with a Stable Outlook. The Short-Term Foreign Currency IDR was affirmed at ‘B’.

In June 2018 Belarusbank received “KBC Partnership Award 2017” from KBC Bank N.V., Brussels (Belgium) for advanced achievements in the sphere of interbank partnership in 2017.

In June 2018 Belarusbank and Russia’s Vnesheconombank signed a credit facility agreement to the tune of $30 million.

In July 2018 Belarusbank’s Contact Center became the country’s first holder of ISO18295-1:2017 certificate. The certificate will remain valid till June 22, 2022. 

In August 2018 Citibank Europe plc set a limit on trade finance with Belarusbank. The funds will be used for financing of foreign trade contracts concluded by Belarusbank’s corporate clients (Belarusian importers).

In September 2018 a delegation of Turkish Banking and Insurance Trade Unions (BASS) visited Belarusbank.

In September 2018 Belarusbank received a delegation of Shanghai Rural Commercial bank.

In September 2018 Belarusbank became the title partner of the 7th Conference of German economic clubs from Central and Eastern Europe titled “Belarus: Chances and Risks”.

In October 2018 the International Investment Bank issued for the first time an irrevocable reimbursement undertaking with a 2-year tenor by order of Belarusbank in favour of a Czech bank.

In October 2018 a delegation of Belarusbank headed by Deputy Chairman of the Board Viktar Perepelitsa took part in Bpifrance Inno Generation (B.I.G.) in Paris at the invitation of French financial institution Bpifrance. One of the items on the agenda was the signing of an addendum to the Memorandum of Understanding between Belarusbank and Bpifrance. During their visit to Paris representatives of Belarusbank met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to France Pavel Latushka and other Embassy employees. In addition, Belarusbank delegation conducted negotiations with several French financial institutions.

In October 2018 Belarusbank took part in the 15th international forum on banking information technologies BANKIT'2018.

In November 2018 Belarusbank became the general partner of the international economic conference KEF-2018.

In November 2018 the European Investment Bank and Belarusbank signed a Finance Contract for SME financing. The signing ceremony took place during the official visit of EIB Vice-President Alexander Stubb to the Republic of Belarus.

In November 2018 Belarusbank organized its 10th international conference for partners and clients in Frankfurt-am-Main. The event gathered over 100 representatives of financial institutions and insurance companies from Germany, Russia, Switzerland, Austria, China, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and other countries, as well as the World Bank and International Finance Corporation.

In November 2018 Belarusbank and KfW IPEX-Bank signed a Basic Loan Agreement.

In November 2018 a delegation of Belarus’ government bodies and representatives of Belarusbank held a number of meetings in Germany and France with the view of the expansion of bilateral trade relations. Among the participants in negotiations there were Minister of Finance of the Republic of Belarus Maksim Yermolovich, Chairman of the Board of Belarusbank Viktar Ananich, representatives of the National Bank and the Ministry of Finance.

In December 2018 Belarusbank for the 4th time received the Straight Through Processing Excellence Award from Citibank N.A., New York for the high quality of international wire transfers.

In December 2018 international rating agency S&P Global Ratings affirmed the long-term and short-term credit ratings of Belarusbank at “В/В”. The Outlook is stable.

In December 2018, following market research with the involvement of experts and consumers, Belarusbank once again received “Choice of the Year” award in the “Bank of the Year” nomination. 

On the basis of the performance in 2018, in December 2018 Belarusbank received honorary awards from Visa International payment system. The bank received a diploma for launching Visa Easy Payment Service (a service that simplifies the transactions of Visa cardholders at points of sale) and a diploma of the leader in the promotion of Visa Contactless Payments.

In December 2018 Belarusbank raised a syndicated loan in the amount of EUR 151 million. The funds are provided by tranches with a tenor of 1.5 or 2 years for the general corporate purposes and trade finance projects of the bank’s clients. The transaction was arranged by 14 financial institutions of Russia and CIS for three of which it was the first deal of this kind with the bank.

2017

In January 2017 Belarusbank took part in CDB international conference “Economic Silk Route: Financial Innovation and Integrated Development” in Sanya.

On March 1, 2017 Belarusbank attracted a guaranteed loan in the amount of $100 million from the People’s Republic of China.

In March 2017 Belarusbank became the title partner of the annual international conference titled “The Republic of Belarus: Trade Finance 2017”.

In March 2017 Global Finance named Belarusbank “the best Belarusian bank in the emerging markets of Central and Eastern Europe”.

In March 2017 Belarusbank received first STP Excellence Award from KBC Bank NV.

In April 2017 EMEA Finance magazine recognized Belarusbank as “Best bank in Belarus”, ASB Broker (a part of holding company JSC “Savings Bank “Belarusbank”) as “Best broker in Belarus”.

In April 2017 Belarusbank participated in the celebration of Financial Literacy Week for children and youth (Global Money Week-2017).

In April 2017 International rating agency S&P Global Ratings has upgraded the short-term credit ratings of Belarusbank from ‘C’ to ‘B’. The agency has affirmed the long-term credit ratings of the bank at ‘B-‘, outlook stable.

In May 2017 Representatives of Belarusbank and China-Belarus CJSC Industrial Park Development Company held an extended business meeting focused on the possibilities of expanding cooperation in various fields of activity.

On May 16-17, 2017 a delegation of trade unions from 15 countries visited the head office of Belarusbank in the framework of the 2nd international conference titled “Bank, Finance and Insurance Trade Unions and the Future of the Labor World” which took place in Minsk.

On May 18, 2017 took place a meeting with a delegation of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, which consisted of representatives of government authorities, the Embassy of Pakistan to the Republic of Belarus, the State Bank of Pakistan, educational institutions and other organizations.

In June 2017 Belarusbank received $40 million facility from the Eurasian Development Bank for trade financing.

In June 2017 Belarusbank signed export finance MoU with Development Bank of Kazakhstan.

In June 2017 Head of Belarusbank participated in meeting of SCO IBC Council in Astana.

In June 2017 Belarusbank became the winner in all categories of Cbonds Awards CIS-2017 in the Republic of Belarus.

On July 20, 2017 in Paris Belarusbank signed Memorandum of Understanding with Bpifrance.

On July 24, 2017 Belarusbank fully repaid the largest syndicated loan in the history of the bank in the amount of EUR 250 million.

In August 2017 Fitch Ratings has affirmed the Long-term Issuer Default Ratings (IDR) of Belarusbank at ‘B-’ and has revised the Outlook to Positive from Stable. Short-term foreign currency IDR was affirmed at B.

In August 2017 Belarusbank and UnionPay International signed Memorandum of Understanding.

In September 2017 Belarusbank raised funds in the amount of over $90 million in the euro equivalent to upgrade Minsk’s HPP No.3.

On September 12, 2017 Belarusbank signed Framework Agreement of Cooperation with Sinosure.

In September 2017 a stamped envelope in honor of 95th Anniversary of Belarusbank was cancelled in Minsk.

In October 2017 S&P Global Ratings upgraded the long-term credit ratings of Belarusbank from ‘B-‘ to ‘B’. Outlook is ‘Stable’. The agency has affirmed the short-term credit ratings of the Bank at ‘B‘.

On October 26, 2017 Belarusbank became title partner of CIS Finance and Banking Forum.

In November 2017 Belarusbank received an award of Citibank N.A., New York for the excellent quality of international bank transfer service – “Straight Through Processing Excellence Award”.

2016

2015

Belarusbank delegation took part in took part in a seminar organized by the Interbank Consortium of Shanghai Cooperation Organization titled “Building an Economic Silk Route: Finance and Planning”. The seminar in Sanya (China) functioned as an informal networking venue.

Global Finance named Belarusbank the best bank in Belarus.

Belarusbank sponsored an international conference titled “Belarus and CIS: Trade Finance”.

Belarusbank found a new business partner in Germany. On March 31, 2015 the bank signed a Basic Loan Agreement with Landesbank Hessen Thueringen (Helaba). The signing ceremony took place in Belarusbank’s headquarters in Minsk.  

Belarusbank established cooperation with the International Investment Bank.

EMEA Finance magazine named Belarusbank the best bank in the Republic of Belarus. As one of the most prestigious financial awards, the title conferred on Belarusbank by EMEA Finance serves as a confirmation of the bank’s reliable reputation on the international level.
