Head of Belarusbank participates in meeting of SCO IBC Council in Astana (press release)

Belarusbank delegation headed by Chairman of the Board Viktar Ananich took part in the session of the Interbank Consortium of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization that was held in Astana (Kazakhstan) on June 7-9, 2017.

Addressing the meeting of the SCO IBC Council, Viktar Ananich stressed that the initiatives of the IBC member banks connected with the further development of business streams in Belarus would be extensively supported by Belarusbank.

“We are also interested in the presence of the Silk Road Fund in our country. We are inviting the Fund for active cooperation in the sphere of project implementation, both as an investor and as a shareholder”, Viktar Ananich stressed.

The head of Belarusbank also pointed out that, being the representative of the national banking system of Belarus in the SCO IBC, the Bank supports the formation of the new financial infrastructure in Eurasia, with due consideration of the interests of all countries of the continent.  

This type of financial instrument, free of any country-specific peculiarities, would help develop national economies, as well as support them in critical situations”, Viktar Ananich explained.

The Interbank Consortium of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization adopted a development strategy for the middle term (2017-2022). The strategy stipulates the realization of cross-border infrastructure projects, as well as the development of cooperation with international financial institutions operating in the SCO region and Asia.

In addition to the meeting of the Council of the SCO IBC, Astana hosted a joint forum of the SCO Interbank Consortium and the SCO Business Council. The outcomes of the meeting of the SCO IBC Council were finalized in the Minutes of the Meeting. The Joint Forum of the SCO IBC and the SCO Business Council resulted in a series of bilateral documents. In particular, Belarusbank and the Development Bank of Kazakhstan signed a Memorandum of Understanding on export finance.

During his visit to Astana, Viktar Ananich held negotiations with CEO of the Development Bank of Kazakhstan and Chairman of the Council of the SCO Interbank Consortium Bolat Zhamishev, President of China Development Bank Zheng Zhijie, President of the Silk Road Fund Wang Yanzhi. In addition, Belarusbank delegation met with the top management of State Corporation “Bank for Development and Foreign Economic Affairs” (Vnesheconombank).

The delegates also met with Anatoly Nichkasov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Belarus to Kazakhstan. According to the participants of the meeting, Belarusbank has all the necessary financial instruments and opportunities for the expansion of cooperation with Kazakh financial institutes, which will result in the support of Belarusian companies cooperating with residents of Kazakhstan.

Astana simultaneously hosted the meeting of the SCO Heads of State Council. At the invitation of the Kazakh Government, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization will take part in Astana EXPO-2017, a specialized international exhibition that will end on September 10, 2017. More than 110 countries and around 20 international organizations have officially confirmed their participation. Belarus is among the participants with its own national pavilion.

The SCO Interbank Consortium was established in accordance with the Agreement on Interbank Cooperation (Consortium) within the SCO dated 26 October 2005. The SCO IBC is a mechanism for financing and providing banking services to investment projects supported by the governments of the SCO member states in priority areas of cooperation.

The $40 billion Silk Road Fund was established by China on 29 December 2014 in Beijing to support the infrastructure projects that will be implemented within the Belt and Road Initiative.
